Christmas 2011 at Shopping Mall and Pen Lite E-PL2

Shopping Malls used to have their premises well decorated in December for the Christmas seasons. However this year not many malls have put up great displays and some are rather quiet with their efforts. Maybe Chinese New Year is just round the corner or maybe 2011 was not a good year and as a result, low on budget as well.  Anyway, only the owner and the management know best.


Those shopping malls who have their decorations put up had it there from the beginning of December 2011 till January 1, 2012. The Christmas decorations attracted lots of kids and shutter-bugs. We visited a number of these shopping malls - some are great while some have nothing much to shout about.

The 2011 Christmas decoration theme for Pavilion Kuala Lumpur was Christmas Wonderland. They had a 40-foot tall Christmas tree designed by Tiffany & Co. set up at the concourse area. Right at the entrance of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur visitors were greeted by some giant candies. There were more giant candies and a three layer giant cake in the Christmas Wonderland area. There was also a Magical Carousel for kids but we saw some "overgrown kids" ridding on the carousel as well. Maybe the over sized Christmas tree and giant candies made them feel young all over again.

1 Utama shopping mall had a rather unique Christmas decoration theme for 2011. There was no snow or snowmen and I didn't recall seeing any Santa Claus or Santarina around.  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was no where to be found too! The 1 Utama shopping mall's theme for Christmas 2011 was "Splashing over the Big Blue" a unique winter underwater wonderland concept. That was something extraordinary and a refreshing idea. Indeed it was no easy task putting together something like that and still have the Christmas mood in an under-the-sea setting. Kids seemed to love it and adults were amused and intrigued with this bizarre concept for a Christmas theme.

I wish I was shooting digital 25 years ago.

We went to California, USA for holiday in mid Nov 1992.  Looking back that was exactly 25 years ago. We spent the last few days of our trip at my wife's classmate home in Los Angeles. In their house  They had a huge beautiful pet, a green Parrot called Ziggy that lived in their study. If my memories serve well I think parrot Ziggy was easily over 3 feet tall. Portrait of parrot Ziggy.  The mostly green plumage resembles a military parade uniform and earn this species of parrot the name military macaw.  This photo was taken in 1992 using Olympus OM-3 with  Olympus OM-Zuiko 35-105mm F3.5-F4.5 zoom lens on Fuji Velvia 35 mm slidefilm.        Parrot Ziggy belonged to the military macaw ( Ara militaris)  species of large beautiful Parrot.   Initially Ziggy was not comfortable with our presence but after two days it got accustomed to these two visitors from afar. Macro with M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm F/2.8 Macro MSC Lens

Having experienced the joy of macro photography with the Olympus MCON-P01 macro converter, my wife is all set for the real thing and she is now a proud owner of the highly acclaimed Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital ED 60mm F/2.8 macro lens. This lens is lightweight but well-built and about 80% longer in length than the M.Zuiko 45mm F/1.8 which is another Olympus prime lens with many positive users feed back. For us the 60mm F/2.8 macro is a more versatile and useful lens for the type of photography that Elaine engage in. We treat lenses and cameras like an artist's tool set that are acquired based on its ability in adding value to our creative pursuit.
