A New Way of Looking.

The new generation of mirrorless system cameras such as the Olympus Micro Four Thirds Pen Lite E-PL2 is compact and light weight. The image quality from these Micro Four Thirds cameras is good enough for most applications. The Micro Four Thirds system also has a comprehensive range of compact interchangeable lenses and accessories which add versatility to how images can be captured. All these advantages have made the Micro Four Thirds and mirrorless system cameras one of the fastest growing segment in the digital cameras market.

The Olympus digital Pen series are a very popular mirrorless system cameras. The charms of the Pen series are many, the main one being the total size of the system. The camera body is small yet not too small for the average human hand. The system lenses are in matching sizes and balance well on the Pen camera body. The Pen series of cameras each has a different appeal and character in their design which make them stand out from the rest of the mirrorless system cameras.

Our newly acquired Pen Lite E-PL2 is one cute camera with a tad of retro film camera look in a contemporary camera body. The Pen Lite E-PL2 camera with its M.Zuiko 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II standard zoom lens can easily slip into my waist pouch or my wife's handbag. Though the E-PL2 is quite a bit bigger than the Canon Powershot compact camera that we used to carry with us, the slightly extra bulk of the Pen Lite E-PL2 camera is worth the trouble with the improved image quality and features. The image quality of most mirrorless system cameras is a close match to many DSLRs. However there is no way we can carry even the smallest DSLR with lens in a waist pouch or an average size lady handbag.

The purpose of having a camera is to create photographs. So here are three photographs from the first batch of photos shot with our E-PL2. All the images were taken by my wife as she experimented and practiced to getting acquainted with her new E-PL2 camera.

The first one below is a close-up of a blooming red Desert Rose from her little garden at our backyard. All photos in this series were captured with M.Zuiko 14-42 f3.5-5.6 II standard zoom lens that comes with the Pen Lite E-PL2 camera kit.

With her new Pen Lite E-PL2 camera she started to notice things she had missed or taken for granted in the past. The Olympus Pen Lite E-PL2 somehow changed the way she "look and see" things. See what she found in her garden for the first time :  a caterpillar of the Lime butterfly specie transforming itself into a pupa on the leaf of her potted Aloe Vera.

She suddenly realised that looking through her camera, the caterpillars and other insects didn't look so creepy and ugly after all - in fact they even looked cute at times. The next photo of the pupa was taken with the Pen Lite E-PL2 camera with the built-in flash turned on and set on auto flash.

Isn't it true that a new camera can magically transform our way of seeing and looking at familiar things. That can only happen if you enthusiastically use your camera to create images. In photography what matters most is looking and seeing and she just discovered "a new way of looking".
